Mountain Bike World Championships GB’s Reece Wilson Wins Men’s Downhill Title

Great Britain’s Reece Wilson won gold in the men’s downhill at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Austria.

His time of three minutes 51.243 seconds clinched his first rainbow jersey with Austria’s David Trummer and Remi Thirion of France second and third.

Despite entering the championships with confidence, the Scot was in disbelief at his achievement following the win.

“I came here and believed I could win,” said an emotional Wilson.

“Now that I’m here I can’t believe it. It’s insane.”

Britons Bernard Kerr and Greg Williamson came fifth and seventh respectively.

The women’s downhill race was won by Camille Balanche of Switzerland with a time of 5:08.426, with Britain’s Mikayla Parton finishing fifth.

On Saturday, Scotland’s Isla Short earned a fifth-place finish in the women’s elite cross country race.

This month’s prestigious Paris-Roubaix race has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was due to be held on 25 October, having already been postponed from its original April date.

But the men’s and women’s races have been cancelled by local authorities.

On Thursday, French health minister Olivier Veranthat announced that the Lille metropole in northern France was being placed under maximum Covid-19 alert because of rising cases.

The race, known as ‘the Queen of the Classics’, was won last year by Belgian Philippe Gilbert and famously involves many sections of cobbled road.

The 2021 race is scheduled for 11 April.
